The district of Pampas Grande has 1,044 inhabitants. 356 live in the urban nucleus of Pampas Grande, while the rest live in the medium and small population centers of the rural area. The expansion of the reservoir will increase the water storage capacity of the Asiaq reservoir by 79%. This will allow a greater amount of water to infiltrate into the subsoil and emerge in the lower part of Pampas Grande, providing a greater supply of water for direct human consumption, agriculture and livestock.
The Asiaq Reservoir Expansion Project will retain and infiltrate rainwater, and to increase water supply for human consumption, agriculture, and livestock.
The main objective is to expand the Asiaq reservoir to retain and infiltrate rainfall and/or runoff water. In doing this it would increase the supply of water for human consumption, agriculture, and livestock in the district of Pampas Grande, province of Huaraz, department of Ancash in Peru. There were four specific actions to be taken to make this successful:
-
Gather the users of the irrigation water user committees of Pampas Grande, to coordinate and report on the proposed expansion of the reservoir for the purpose of retention and infiltration of rainwater.
-
Enter into an Agreement with Pampas Grande Irrigation Water Users Committee so that they agree to support the expansion, operation, and maintenance of the reservoir for infiltration purposes.
-
Expansion of a reservoir with materials from the area (earth and stone) to retain and infiltrate rainwater for which the following activities will be carried out: layout and leveling of the land; and movement of earth with machinery and installation of pipes for the overflow of water.
-
Carry out monitoring and maintenance of the reservoir infrastructure during the rainy season to prevent water discharge.
The next steps will include:
✔ Inauguration ceremony of the expansion of the reservoir.
✔ With the arrival of the rainy season in the months of December to March: accumulate water in the reservoir.
✔ Supervise that there are no leaks, collapses or other problems in the reservoir.
